Do you feel as though your career is stagnating? Maybe you want to make sure that you do not get stuck in a dead-end job but don’t know what steps to take to help yourself. Either way, there are things you can do, but it all starts with you recognising the position you are in so you can make positive changes for the future.
Take the Blame
The first thing you need to do is accept the blame and take responsibility for your actions. If you can take the credit for any positive outcomes, and if you can make your accomplishments clear to your superiors then this will show your maturity as well as your professionalism. It means you will be better recognised and it also shows that you are willing to take responsibility for whatever comes with your role. If you are the type of person who never takes accountability for their actions when things go wrong, or if you do not acknowledge your achievements then you probably won’t be seen as a suitable candidate when a promotion comes up.
Up your Game
You may think that as long as you carry on doing your job, you will eventually progress, right? Competition for positions higher within the company is often strong and if you do not make an effort to stand out from the crowd then you will end up being overlooked in the future. If you want to avoid this then show your passion and also make sure that you are enthusiastic about any new positions that could well come up. If your boss needs a hand with a big project but it means you working outside of your normal hours then do it. Whatever field you work in, it is wise for you to put in the extra hours and for you to constantly demonstrate your competency. By doing this, you can make sure that you are always pushing the limits and getting your name out there.
Be Fair
Engaging in politics at work can be tempting, and this is especially the case if you see it as a chance to get ahead. The truth is that playing games and gossiping is never going to work out for you in the long run. Even if you do your best to keep things fair, word will get around quickly. Resist temptation here and stand out for your skills rather than your ability to badmouth others. If you can do this then you will be able to get ahead without negatively impacting the people who you currently work with. This is vital if you want to go into a leadership position.
Take a Course
If you want to further yourself then it is wise for you to try and take a course. You can also undertake a program or go back to university. If you want to find out what is out there then do your research. It may be that you explore the Avanade graduate program if you want to work in tech or expand your knowledge, for example. Either way, if you can do this then you are bound to see positive results in the future.
