Greenlight’s smart Mastercard debit card for kids cannot be connected to PayPal’s services the same way a bank-issued debit card can be. Consumers that are looking for a debit card for a minor child that they would like to connect to PayPal may be limited in their options. PayPal requires customers to be over the age of 18 to open an account. Also, PayPal no longer offers student accounts. This means if your child is a minor, they will not be able to open their own PayPal.

How can I use Greenlight with PayPal?

Your child’s Greenlight debit card can be added to a PayPal account as a funding source much like any other debit card or prepaid debit card. This means that wherever your child would like to pay for goods or services with PayPal, online or in-store, they can choose to fund the transaction through a linked Greenlight debit card. However, since minors are not allowed to have their own PayPal account, this will only apply to a child that is over 18. PayPal does not allow authorized users to be added to a consumer PayPal account.

Can I use a PayPal account to fund a Greenlight debit card?

Greenlight’s debit card for kids can be funded with money earned as an allowance transferred from a parent’s account or a paycheck through direct deposit from their employer. However, Greenlight does not allow a child’s account to be funded through PayPal. Restricting third-party payment processors allows Greenlight to avoid the extra fees associated with third-party services.

Can I transfer my PayPal balance to Greenlight?

No, the money on your PayPal account cannot be transferred to a Greenlight parent’s account or directly to a child’s debit card. This is true even if you’re able to connect a Greenlight debit card to your PayPal account. PayPal recognizes linked Greenlight debit cards as prepaid cards. Therefore, it will not be eligible to receive funds from your PayPal balance through instant transfer or standard transfer.

Can I use Greenlight with PayPal to add funds?

No, funds from Greenlight cannot be transferred to your PayPal balance. Typically, PayPal accounts can only be funded with a transfer from a connected bank account. PayPal accounts are designed to receive payments that can be spent directly from the account or transferred to the owner’s bank account. Account owners have limited options for transferring funds to their PayPal account.
